Most people who undergo this surgical procedure report experiencing minimal discomfort. It is advisable to bring in some pain medication which can be taken immediately after the procedure, whilst the toe (s) is/are still numb. This gives the medication a head start, so that it starts taking effect whilst the anaesthesia wears off, thereby minimising any discomfort. Most patients report that they only take pain relief for the remainder of that day, and upon waking, have no further need for pain relief. The administration of local anaesthesia is given very slowly also minimising any discomfort. Upon returning for the first re-dressing, people report that they wish they had arranged the procedure a long time ago.

It is not advisable to wear your shoe(s) directly after the procedure. Additional sterile gauze will be applied to your dressing, in order to absorb any excessive bleeding post operative (although in most cases the dressings do not show any bloodstains/strike through). The dressing will be a little bit too bulky for you to wear your shoes. It is advised that you bring a pair of thongs/sandals/open toe shoes to be worn directly after the procedure.

This will vary from one individual to another, and depends on the type of footwear. After the procedure, you will be advised to return to the clinic within 2-3 days for your first re-dressing, so it is very important that closed shoes are not worn until then. If your work requires that you wear safety boots, these can be worn after the first 3 days, once the bulky dressing is replaced by a much smaller dressing. Closed shoes can slow down the healing process, and may cause a slight discomfort towards the end of the day. Once again, this will vary from one individual to another.

Once you return for your first re-dressing / review, a smaller, less bulkier dressing will be applied at the clinic, after the toe(s) have been thoroughly cleaned. From then on, you will be responsible for your own daily dressings, or you can ask a family member to apply the dressing(s).

Your health fund may cover some of the procedure, but all funds are different. Some funds may not cover the nail surgery, but may pay for review appointments.

At times it may be necessary for the podiatrist to discuss this with your GP.

The duration of the procedure will vary from one individual to the next. This depends on how many toes & sides will be operated on. It also depends on how quick you react to the local anaesthesia. The procedures are never rushed, and take place in an extremely relaxed environment. Prior to the procedure or after your initial consultation, an estimate will be provided.

It is advisable that you bring someone along to drive you home after the procedure.

You are welcome to bring a family member/partner or close friend in with you during the procedure.

You may eat prior to the procedure, as it is performed under Local Anaesthesia

There are times when, some individuals are frightened/anxious about having local anaesthesia. Our trained staff members will have you feeling at ease and be there by your side, if you feel the need, and don't have a family member/ friend/partner for support.Over the years it has been found that having a loved one nearby for local anaesthesia administration (L.A) often increases/accentuates reactions to needles/LA, and at times it is preferable that a staff member enters the clinic room during the process of LA. Once this has been administered, family/friend etc are welcome to enter the room, as the patient often becomes less anxious and more inquisitive & wants to sit up and observe. (although the examination couch/table is usually flat)

Yes, you are welcome to bring a book in to read during the procedure. You may also keep yourself occupied with games on your phone etc. Over the years I have never noted anyone actually reading the book they brought in, although the intention was there.
